FOOT WORK

This work reflects on hobby artists and the mass-produced slip-cast porcelain figures and trinkets that filled so many grandparents’ and parents’ homes. Small figurines and shoes, painted with china paints, became everyday artworks — cherished yet commonplace. My Nana was a hobby artist who adorned many of these pieces with fine lines, lace-like decoration, and delicate brushwork, carefully keeping them safe behind glass cabinets and out of children’s reach. The foot itself is not always seen as beautiful or precious — almost everyone has them — yet they carry us through every step of our lives. In the same way, those fragile porcelain figures I admired at my Nana’s house have carried me forward into my own art practice.
